maybe it's a brain tumor

or maybe a sinus infection. but i've had a migraine-quality headache since sunday. i naturally assumed it was related to the cold i seem to be suffering from, and i still think it is, but it's getting pretty old.

teacher using coke in class

i heard on the news last night about a local pre-school teacher has been charged with using cocaine in the classroom. she snorted it out of the bag and used a dollar bill, denoting two at least two occassions. she has been charged with a misdemeanor.

a misdemeanor! i can't find the story to link here, but this seems wrong. people are incarcerated for far less serious crimes than using a dangerous, addictive, and agression-invoking drug in the presence of 4 year olds.

new prison stats

the latest stats for prison and jail populations have been released. nothing new really, populations are increasing:

Imprisonment rose by 1.6 percent on the pervious year, and jail populations rose by 4.7 percent, for a total of just over 2.1 million people behind bars ... Women make up 12.7 percent of jail inmates. Nearly 6 in 10 offenders in local jails are racial or ethnic minorities ... nearly 4.7 percent of black males were in prison or jail, compared to 1.9 percent of Hispanic males, and 0.7 percent of white males. Among males in their late 20s, nearly 12 percent of black males, compared to 3.9 percent of Hispanic males and 1.7 percent of white males, were incarcerated.

in case you are wondering, the US incarcerates more people than any other nation, and LA an GA lead the nation.

also, reported by talkleft, 1 in every 136 US residents are incarcerated.

it's bad enough

when a police officer is killed in the line of duty. it's even worse when he is shot by a fellow officer:

At 11:15 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to the 400 block of Nicholson St. on a reported shooting. They found a man who had been shot, and he was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, a suspect was located on Virginia Beach Boulevard, and was taken into custody. Officers recovered two handguns from that suspect. Charges are pending against that suspect, in regard to the initial shooting.

Officers on the scene were told about a second gunshot victim inside a home in the 400 block of Nicholson St. The initial officers at that scene reported a “large crowd” in the courtyard there, and requested back-up.

Five uniformed officers responded. One of the officers saw a man in the crowd, later identified as Seneca Darden [the killed officer], in a white T-shift and blue jeans, holding a handgun. An officer commanded him to drop the gun. The officer fired at Darden, who was hit “multiple times.”

i rarely watch the show, only because i think it is not nearly as funny as in the ancient past, but last night's 'tv funhouse' [making fun of bush] was hilarious.

no more periods

yes, i'm talking about that kind of period. apparently, quite a few new methods of birth control are giving women the chance to skip the monthly visitor altogether.

i've heard that it is not good for your body to miss periods because it 'cleanses' your system. personally, i would consider once every 84 days enough.

this news is awesome. now, which, if any, of these will be covered by insurance?

i tried for an odometer update

last wednesday, on the way to chincoteague to drop off little missy before my trip, the odometer hit 30,000 miles.

considerate thieves

thinking about my trip to vancouver reminds me of the one other trip i took outside the US. a friend and i [for anonymity, let's call him brian] visited paris for a week. it was awesome. and we got a very funny story out of it.

i should preface with the information that, anticipating we would need to write down directions, etc. throughout the trip, brian purchased one of those very small pocket notebooks in the airport. it actually had the powerpuff girls on it.

okay, when visiting europe, everyone tells you to look out for pickpockets. and i found that in paris, it's true. they are everywhere. not to worry, brian and i were prepared and did not keep our money in obvious places, like the back pocket. brian actually kept the notebook in his back pocket, for quick access to the notes we jotted down.

while walking through the montmartre area, a parisian gentlemen stumbled and bumped into brian on the crowded street. he then tapped brian on the shoulder and handed my friend the powerpuff girls notebook. the guy had purposefully ran into him and picked his pocket, only to find a pink notebook! it was great. the thief didn't need that so he just gave it back.

i told you about this when it happened, but now the pregnant woman who shot herself in the stomach has been released. free to go.

If an assailant had shot Tammy Skinner in the stomach on the day she was to give birth, killing her baby, he could have been prosecuted.

Because she shot herself earlier this year, however, General District Court Judge James A. Moore decided Monday that she can’t be tried for producing a miscarriage or abortion, and he dismissed the felony charge.

Skinner’s attorney argued at a preliminary hearing that the charge is meant to be used against a third party and that the same offense with similar wording has been tested in courts in both Florida and Georgia and failed. It simply does not govern an expectant mother doing something to herself.

drug decriminalization in mexico

mexico has passed legislation decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, LSD, hallucinogenic mushrooms, and peyote.

police will not penalize people for possessing up to '5 grams of marijuana, 5 grams of opium, 25 milligrams of heroin or 500 milligrams of cocaine. People caught with larger quantities of drugs will be treated as narcotics dealers and face increased jail terms under the plan.'

i see some problems here (half a gram of cocaine and less than a quarter ounce of marijuana as the limit on personal use, everyone else is considered a drug dealer and will be penalized harshly) but it's a start. the US should follow suit. i say this, not to condone drug use, but because we should treat drug abuse and addiction as a health problem and save our prison space for those who really need it.

i hope this true. it's awesome. David Copperfield was almost robbed.

but i have been looking through billboard's hot 100 lists for the years since 1991. and i have determined that excluding the good music mentioned above, 1995 was a good year for music. i like 88 and 90, too.

in texas, a teen was sentenced to life in prison for smoking pot once while on probation for a $2.00 stickup. unbelievable.

did you know that the rate of suicides is lower during democratic presidencies?

j-walk has posted voting facts. interestingly:

- 80% of all votes in America are counted by only two companies: Diebold and ES&S.
- Diebold's new touch screen voting machines have no paper trail of any votes. In other words, there is no way to verify that the data coming out of the machine is the same as what was legitimately put in by voters.

this reminds me of a quote from Stalin: 'It's not who votes that counts, it's who counts the votes.'
