headlines

  • the death penalty in in S.C.: The article makes it seem as if it is the first. But it is the first for a federal crime. Not the first ever. In fact, South Carolina has already executed four people this year. (SC does, however, come in at a third of the total executions that our own VA has.)

  • remember her? 'Baby Jessica' Finishes High School: Wow, seventeen years ago, I remember that!

  • sex ed in schools: Abstinence-Only: Does It Work? Virginia has an Abstinence Education Initiative. The VA Department of Health reports that there were 13,586 teen pregnancies in 2002, which reflects both a state and national level decline. Does this mean that teaching abstinence works? I doubt it. Maybe our teens are just listening. Maybe.

  • for locals, The Maglev Mess: 'More than four years ago, Old Dominion University jumped on board a proposal to build the nation's first magnetic levitation train on campus, testing a new technology that the train's designer said would one day whisk passengers from Norfolk to Washington in an hour.'

  • it's June!! June hosts birthdays (including mine), anniversaries, and the beginning of hurricane season: I wouldn't worry, the big ones don't hit until September.

UPDATE at 4:35 pm: this post was originally just headlines. I had some comments to make but didn't have the time earlier. :-)
