abortion and the death penalty

i've noticed that the people who are pro-life are also pro-death penalty. this doesn't make sense to me. if you are against abortion because life is special and important then why isn't life important when it comes to the death penalty? the argument is that capital punishment is a justified punishment for the heinous act of murder. because murder is so awful. because life is so important. nope, not making sense.
