now these students are suing the united states education department over the higher education act. the law denies federal financial aid to 35,000 students a year because they were convicted of drug offenses while receiving the aid.

this, of course, only affects low income students who would otherwise be eligible for financial aid. blacks are hit hardest. [blacks are significantly overrepresented among those convicted of drug crimes.]

drug offenders are the only class of people categorically denied. murderers and child molesters are still eligible.
