who we are

the Virginian-Pilot is running a series based on census data. this data reports how the five hampton roads cities stack up in education, income, families, homes, race, gender, and age.

norfolk has:

more residents below poverty level (though not least in education)
more single mother households
more divorced families
a very high percentage of homes built before 1940
a higher minority population (including foreign-born)
a younger population (by median age) and more elderly
