paper outtakes

"In 2007, several more military confrontations broke out in Mogadishu, primarily as a territorial dispute between Puntland and Somaliland, during which the capital and surrounding areas suffered bombings and ambushes directed at both prominent Somalis and armed forces members. Thousands were killed or wounded in the fighting and hundreds of thousands forced to flee their homes (ICRC Annual Report 2007: Somalia). In other areas of Somalia, conflicts occur as clans and militias are fighting for control of resources. For example, conflict remains in the region of Lower Juba, principally in Kismaayo, as it is the economic strength of this region, with access to fertile agricultural lands and close proximity to fishing and livestock."
