a new pew reports states that one in 31 adults are in prison, jail, or on probation or parole. that's more than seven million people. also, those rates vary by race: 1 in 11 black adults, 1 in 27 Hispanic adults and 1 in 45 white adults are under correctional control.
and what state has the highest correctional population in the US? Georgia.
perhaps even more telling is the low percentage of funding that is allocated for probation and parole. no wonder the recidivism rate is high.
also consider that most people who go to jail or prison are released from jail or prison (in other words, most are not serving life terms). if we add this seven million people to the others who have already been released... goodness.
