two ODU students were shot, one killed, near campus

and then the university released this statement:

Dear Student:
The offices of the Dean of Students and Housing & Residence Life would like to extend any assistance to you and fellow residents of your neighborhood as a result of yesterday morning’s shooting. It is understandable that you might be interested in living in an alternate residence for a little while or for a longer period. We are available to assist and support you at this very difficult time.
Should you want to move on-campus this weekend, please call either Chuck Crawford, Residence Hall Director on duty (757) 334-5029 or Carole Henry, Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life (757) 477-1283. A housing assignment will be offered to you so that you can reside with other summer school students. There is no contractual obligation, and you can live there at no cost for the room through summer school. Additionally, if you would like to live on campus next year, please come to the Housing and Residence Life Office during the week and meet with Dan Terrell, Associate Director, so that he or a member of the staff can assist you with your needs. If you prefer to remain off campus and are in need of off campus housing services and overall guidance, the staff can assist you as well with this effort... If your schedule requires an evening or weekend appointment, we can arrange an appointment at a convenient time.
We also recognize that you or your friends may want to speak to a member of the Counseling Services staff. Should this be the case, please contact ODU Police at 683-4000, and they will put you in touch with someone who can be of assistance to you.
ODU Police and other university officials are working with Norfolk Police to assist in their investigation in this senseless off-campus crime. If anyone has any information, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, please call police immediately at 1888-LOCK-U-UP.
Sincerely,
Donald M. Stansberry dstansbe@odu.edu
Dean of Students
