The stats show a rise in violent crime [increased 1.3 percent nationwide] for the second straight year. There was a rise in big-city homicides while New York City, as I heard on tv this morning, is now the safest big city in America. Wow.
Locally, it's good news. Chesapeake is down 14%. Portsmouth dropped 4%. And, despite an increase in robberies, Norfolk's violent crimes fell by 1.2%.
Data from Virginia Beach was not included in the preliminary report, but police previously reported a 5% increase in violent crimes during 2006.
