wednesday night prom

in NY, Pearl River HS is holding both the junior and senior prom on school nights. the idea here is to curb excessive drinking and after-parties, perhaps even some of the deadly car accidents that stem from prom activities. how would this work? the school has mandated attendance to school the next day, with consequences to those who don't come. for instance, seniors who skip the next day will not be allowed to walk in graduation.

students and parents are outraged. for them, prom night is an important rite of passage that should not be tampered with. i think the principal is onto something. parents say that prom is SO important to child development, but thousands of kids don't attend prom each year (for whatever reason) and they are not damaged for life. and even though they have to come to school the next day, it's not that grueling. there's an early breakfast of eggs, sausage and bacon and field day events until noon, before regular classes.
