i finally watched 'the help.'  what a great movie!

while we were watching, BF said he was glad we didn't live in those times (talking about racial segregation).  sure, that's a given.   i said i was glad we didn't live in a place that required the silver to be polished each week. :-)

TNT Cancels 'Men of a Certain Age'

Watched both of the last two movies yesterday. Part one on DVD and then to the theater for the 12:45 (!) showing of part two. It was a good finale to movies I've been watching for ten years.

I can say, however, it was the first time I had ever been in the mall at 3am (the kid talked me into taking her for the midnight premier, or in our case, first available tickets, but still...).

events from 1985 (back to the future, anyone?)

yes, the reference to back to the future was not lost on me in last night's fringe. after all, the show did feature christopher lloyd.

i hate that fox has moved the show to fridays, but thanks to the internet i can watch it at my leisure. 'firefly' (another scifi nod), as the show was called, was a great episode. each new episode of the show, even after three seasons, sucks me in and blows my mind. love, love it.

oh, and john noble has to be one of the best actors working on tv.

movie ratings

i am about to watch a movie [extraordinary measures] that is rated PG. on the rating screen, it is rated such because of a 'mild suggestive moment.'

suggestive of what?

i understand the premise, but suggestive is an adjective that itself doesn't describe anything in particular.

update: unbelievable. i'm watching another PG movie that is rated 'brief language' [night at the museum].

so this is a nearly silent movie? there's only brief language in it.

50 states, 50 shows

here is a map that lists one television show to represent each of the 50 states. it's pretty neat, as i have always liked this sort of thing. especially to realize that some states have had only one show to take place in them.

CBS programming

i was wondering why our CBS station had infomercials on yesterday during the early football game. [it didn't impact me since i was watching the redskins game on fox, but it was curious they didn't have another game on.]

today, i see the answer. WTKR/CBS posted this: "Sorry Steelers fans, NFL broadcasting rules state that if a local club (in this case, the Redskins) is playing the early game, the other network (us), cannot air a game at the same time. Hence, the paid programming. These are decisions made not by us, but by the NFL, FCC, and networks."

my students talk about this all the time

although i don't watch, i know that shows such as 'teen mom' exist on mtv. i suppose the premise of the show is to show the struggles of teenage moms - one of which is the fact that they have so little money. i get that teen moms struggle with money. but don't these girls get paid for the show?

my very thoughts are the subject of a post at tvsquad. perhaps it's that the show is bogus (set up). perhaps it is that these girls are just that bad with money.

i wonder if there is any connection between the end of soap operas and the increase in women working fulltime.... there very well may be, but i suspect it has more to do with the rise in reality tv.

the good wife

all this recent hub-bub over who alicia will choose [i watch CBS news and they have talked about it quite a bit] and it turns out she doesn't even have a chance to do so! i liked that turn in the story.

the local news this morning had an interview with julianna in which she responded to the question of who the character chose with, "i can't say... i'll just say that the audience will know more than i do."* at the time that i was watching the interview, i found her statement odd and just plain weird. now, of course, it makes perfect sense. :-)

*or something to that effect.

fringe, oh how i miss thee

just found out that joshua jackson, who i love on fringe, played a character named pacey on dawson's creek. never seen it. but i did find out while looking him up that he's from vancouver among a few other neat things.

thoughts on thursday night tv

i had many thoughts after last night:

flashforward makes me so sad that it is ending. i have so many questions and remember so many unaddressed storylines that it makes me want for another season (not happening). they have a lot to close up in next week's episode! and since it is the end of the series, i guess we won't see what life is like the day after the flashforwards.

fringe continues to be awesome. it is the sort of show that makes me sad for summer (okay, not that sad) because i don't want to be without it. i doubt the olivia-nate can pull it off in our world for long, but i can't wait to see how it goes down. and bell took parts of walter's brain because he asked him to! brilliant. what i want to know is whether mark valley's character is still alive in our world (remember he was hooked up to machines at MD) and whether he plays any part in the alternate world? that could bring an interesting twist in the next season now that peter and olivia love each other.

i was completely disappointed by the mentalist last night. we were promised via commercials so much more than what actually happens. yes, we see red john -we are led to believe it is kristina, therefore i think he is the agent we saw at the crime scene who called jane a jerk (his voice was similar)- but to just let jane go? bleh. boring.
